Build basic water safety skills for both parents and children, helping infants and young children ages6 months to about 3 years become comfortable in the water, so they are willing and ready to learn to swim. These basic skills include adjusting to the water environment, showing comfort while maintaining a front or back position in the water and demonstrating. (No exit assessment required)

Gives young children about ages 3 and 5 a positive, developmentally appropriate aquatic learning experience that emphasizes water safety, survival and foundational swimming concepts. Skills are age-appropriate, helping participants achieve success on a regular basis while in a class environment with their peers.

Level 1 – Exit Assessment: With Support

•  Enter independently, using either the ramp, steps or side, travel at least 5 yards, submerge to
  mouth and blow bubbles for at least 3 seconds then safely exit the water. (Children can walk,
  move along the gutter or “swim”.)
• While in shallow water, glide on front at least 2 body lengths, then roll to back and float on back
  for 3 seconds, then recover to a vertical position.

Level 2 – Exit Assessment: With Assistance

• Glide on front at least 2 body lengths, roll to back, float on back for 15 seconds, then recover to a vertical position.
• Glide on back for at least 2 body lengths, roll to front, the recover to a vertical position.
• Swim using combined arm and leg actions on front for at least 3 body lengths, roll to back, float for 15 seconds, roll to front, then continue swimming on front for at least 3 body lengths.

• Move into a back float for 15 seconds, roll to front, then recover to a vertical position.
• Push off and swim using combined are and leg action on front for 5 body lengths, roll to back, float for 15 seconds, roll to front, then continue swimming for 5 body lengths.

Level 3 (Intermediate) – Stroke Development – Exit Assessment

• Jump into deep water from side, recover to the surface, maintain position by treading or floating for 1 minute, rotate one full turn, then turn as necessary to orient to the exit point, level off, swim front crawl and/or elementary backstroke for 25 yards, then exit the water.
• Push off in a streamlined position, then swim front crawl for 15 yards, change position and direction as necessary, swim elementary backstroke 15 yards, then exit the water.

Level 4 (Intermediate) – Stroke Improvement – Exit Assessment

• Perform a feetfirst entry into deep water, swim front crawl for 25 yards, change direction and position as necessary, and swim elementary backstroke for 25 yards.
• Swim breaststroke for 15 yards, change direction and position as necessary, and swim back crawl for 15 yards.
• Submerge and swim 3 to 5 body lengths underwater without hyperventilating, return to the surface, then exit the water.

Level 5 (Advanced) – Stroke Refinement – Exit Assessment

• Perform a shallow-angle dive into deep water, swim front crawl for 50 yards, then swim elementary backstroke for 50 yards, using appropriate and efficient turning styles throughout.
• Swim breaststroke for 25 yards, change direction and position of travel as necessary, and swim back crawl for 25 yards, using appropriate and efficient turning styles throughout.

Level 6 (Advanced) - Swimming and Skill Proficiency – Exit Assessment

• Swim 500 yards continuously, using any 3 strokes of choice, swimming at least 50 yards of each stroke.
