The 10-Minute Walk, also known as the 10-Minute Walk to a Park, refers to a grassroots parks-advocacy movement to ensure that everyone in the United States lives within a 10-minute walk to a high quality park or green space. Lewisville Parks and Recreation has joined the effort to ensure that every resident lives within 10 minutes to a local park.

What is the Green Centerpiece?

Definition: Lewisville has a treasure in its backyard that few Metroplex communities have. The central part of Lewisville is largely flood plain that contains Lewisville Lake and the parks located along its banks, as well as, the Elm Fork of the Trinity River and diverse habitats, including bottom-land forest, prairies and many species of wildlife. This urban wilderness is part of everyday life for all Lewisville residents. This central green space is currently home to extraordinary views, recreational activities and the Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area (LLELA), a consortium of local, state, and national government agencies. The area provides visitors with opportunities for fishing, hiking, camping, canoeing and botanical/wildlife research in the heart of a city. 

The Green Centerpiece was the first Big Move listed in Lewisville 2025 - the community's vision for what Lewisville should like upon our 100th birthday.

The Green Centerpiece Master Strategy establishes action steps for the City and it's partners for managing and creating access to LLELA and the surrounding parks and public spaces in the Green Centerpiece, as well as for updating policy and development guidelines to reflect the sustainable practices and requirements.

City parks in Lewisville became tobacco-free sites in 2020 as part of a comprehensive overhaul of the Code of Ordinances for administration and operation of the parks and recreation system approved unanimously by the City Council.

The use of tobacco or electronic nicotine devices are prohibited at any city park. Having tobacco free city parks is primarily a matter of health and safety for visitors, but also has other benefits related to park maintenance because cigarette butts are the most common piece of litter found in the parks.

“Ensuring park users have a smoke-free park system is an incredible accomplishment for Lewisville,” Anaya said. “Prohibiting the use of tobacco and electronic nicotine devices in our parks system will enhance visitors' experience as well as help us protect the environment.”

Anaya said going tobacco-free also provides general safety benefits, noting that heavily wooded areas such as Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area (LLELA), Central Park, Thrive Nature Park and public trails along greenbelts and creeks can easily catch fire when cigarettes are discarded.
